SHOW & TELL
There are several ways to talk about youth, desires, voluntary misunderstanding, transgressions, friendship, fear and passion. Matthew Coupe has done it by following closely a group of young-models making experience in the fashion world. The result is a story for images, disenchanted, frank and contrasting. For once, fashion takes a back seat and what emerges is rather life. Boys with their energy and arrogant innocence.
«Models, be they male or female are often regarded with a lifestyle of glamour, exclusivity and ostentation. Throughout this project I found this notion to be a complete overstatement and misconception. For the past year I have immersed myself within a small band of male models, capturing moments throughout the ever-changing and sporadic lifestyle they lead - by mixing raw composition with light I have captured the quirks of the fashion playground. The boys I had met and began to photograph knew nothing of the glitz and glamour they were supposedly so apart of, they were all just kids with day jobs – and still are. This project is not just about the reality of the fashion industry and all its preconceptions; it’s about friendship, brotherhood and the delicate transition from youth to young manhood.»
