AMERICAN
Werner Amann, born 1969, studied at the FH Dortmund and at the London School of Printing. He lives and works in Berlin. The series won last year’s FotoBook Award in Kassel and in it’s statement, the award jury chaired by Martin Parr wrote: «Through his strong, intense images, the photographer succeeds in capturing the American soul in a flowing essay composed of documentation and poetry.
«Werner Amann’s series is a visual examination of the American people and landscapes. Amman develops his imagery by juxtaposing cinematografic clichees, prefabricated images and authentic, fragile, personal moments, focussing on the in-between-situations of the everyday – a fleeting glance, a mum waiting on a car park, a frisky moment among friends. In the end, AMERICAN combines a romanticized perception of America and an objective, documentary eye. The moment of friction of these two makes for these photographs to not only document it’s time, but to capture an attitude to life.»
