OPEN CALL ‘FAUNA’
JOHNNY PANESSA
«Growing up in Eastern Long Island, long summer days were spent chasing gartner snakes, storytelling about bats getting caught in the neighborhood girls’ hair and hunting Eastern Box Turtles to keep as pets. With the years stepping by, the animal sightings grew fewer and fewer. Rapid housing construction and loss of habitat nearly drew sightings to extinction. Through my teens and twenties the damage of fertilizing, septic tanks and this over-building was evident with so few birds and animal sightings in the immediate vicinity. In the last few summers though the fauna has been thriving and coming back with each summer amounting to even more animals returning. Fox are everywhere, species of birds once in danger have ramped up, wild turkeys are in abundance and Eastern Box turtles are roaming in my lawn again».
