CALIFORNIA VERNACULAR
There are different reasons for moving to California: leaving behind a bad relationship, escaping your hometown, or thinking you’ll be a star. However the point, as told by the young photographer Liz Kuball, is «what you find when you get here» as «things aren’t what you thought they’d be». The comparison with our previous expectations and illusions become the field upon which to measure one’s self. This different and unexpected side becomes a space to discover and capture. In this hidden world of the city Kuball finds a freedom to photograph and to define what she loves about photography and why. In her shots, taken from the series California Vernacular we found a fresh yet conscious look. «Many disillusioned move back, but others stay», say Kuball, and «hang on to a world that, to us is even more fantastic than the one we thought we’d find, because it’s real in its absurdity and because we have stories to tell». Liz Kuball shows that the exploration of a new environment works on a subconscious level, and that photography is a way to better understands her. This project, as well as Back East, is an ongoing story rather than a closed series and we like to think that it can remain so.
