‘Butterfly Days’

In a small village in the south of England lives a small group of people who feel very pasionate about butterflies and moths; not merely because of their beauty, or their colors, or even the way they move, but because of all these things together. They know all about their habbits and their namnes in Latin. They collect books on them. They observe and record them. They even grow plants that attract them so as to have them near. They don’t understand how some poeple enjoy catching them. Butterfly Days is a love story between humans and butterflies.

The project started by chance back in 2008. I was visiting the local zoo, which I hadn’t been to in ages, and started taking pictures of the captive animals, just like everyone else was doing. My attention kept being drawn to their eyes, which, to me, seemed very sad, and I ended focusing my camera on them. I was intrigued by whether my impressions would be apparent to other people in the images. I wondered if that popular old saying, referring to humans, that goes “the eyes are the windows to the soul” could hold true for animals as well.

Fake Suns’

There is a kind of second life for the trees that are immersed in the cities. They never take a rest, most of them are continually hitten by artificial lights that makes them living in a fake, neverending day. What artificial lighting does is to mutate the Photoperiodism extending the day length, this can change flowering patterns, and most importantly, promote continued growth thereby preventing trees from developing dormancy that allows them to survive the rigors of winter weather. The aim of the project is to give a “visual voice” to this familiar condition, that we can all recognize in our Metropolis and that it is as common as usually ignored by people, while it represent a kind of new cohabitation between citylife and nature.

‘Caged Living’

Owen Harvey’s ‘Caged Living’ acts as a set of reflections on the simplest of human-animal relations. The flesh that unites us, in its indistinguishable texture and colour, appears as a powerful reminder of our shared condition. The confrontations of two images (Harvey calls them “couplets”) emphasise the absurdities of our relationships with other animals, and this seems to me to be a very effective strategy for introducing the subject. Although the rest of Harvey’s photographic work does not concentrate on the animal subject entirely, I must say this short essay is very successful for its vitality and sensibility.

Zoos expose a tension between the natural and the artificial. Animals are confined in environments that contain manufacturated and natural elements controlled by men. Branches, leaves and sand are mixed with the paint from the sceneries. Cement coexists with vegetation. This attempt to recreate wildlife in an urban environment produces a kind of artificial nature that hangs in a no man’s land.

‘Right Time Right Place’

Being at the right place at the right time is usually associated with happiness and success. But what happens when we are at the right place at the wrong time? Do we even know that this is the right place? And what if it turns out that it is the wrong place after all? But the right time! Whoever loses his orientation over this thought will get a feeling for Robert Rutöd’s latest pictures. The Vienna-born photographer wandered for five years through Europe and has proven to be a keen observer with an often tragicomic view: The blind man who finds orientation by putting his stick in a tram track, the helpless swan that finds itself frozen to the vast stretch of ice, or the amputee operator of a shooting range set up in a ruined building. It gets macabre with the portraits of the Pope, Hitler and Mussolini decorating the labels of wine bottles.

‘Vanitas’

These images are constructed realities; artificial still-lifes that stage scenarios emanating, seemingly, from imperceptible disturbances or unknown, obscure forces. These artificial environments, like our own, are man-made, filled with mundane and precious things. Some of these things are heavily symbolic, delicate, unique, and alive. But often, they are deceptively synthetic, ignored, distorted, spoiled, broken, and discarded. These are the worlds I want to rescue- with all of their damaged objects, and the false stories they tell. They are places that exist just below the surface, and extricating them means exploring the increasingly permeable border between the artificial and the natural, and the cherished and forsaken.

Speaking to a specific symbolism inspired by sixteenth and seventeenth century vanitas, these still-life paintings reference the Latin word meaning “emptiness” and loosely correspond to the vapidity and transient nature of earthly life. Despite their melancholic affect, and with more or less similar affect, my images aim to evoke a similar quality and turn away from the reality of fleeting things to allow for the opportunity to experience the spell of stillness, that rare quality in a frenetic culture, to create enduring images that evoke visions- deathly still illusions- that exist beyond temporality, in worlds that consistently recall the brevity and insubstantiality of life.
Delicate, broken surfaces, fallen birds, remnants of some material world, create deliberately entropic, enigmatic places where what is left seems like a void- leaving only shiny abstraction and a silent, mute exuberance. In the end, these views form worlds fraught with inexplicable occurrences followed by inexplicable aftermaths—imagined ontologies, filled with vestiges of dystopian reverie, lifeless creatures, an intermingling of uncertainty, and the frailty and filth of spaces that know no specific locations— only a world that has not yet been cleared away.

‘Japanimals’

The Japanese city is inhabited by animals, some real and well alive (cats and dogs, carps, crows, crayfishes, herons…) but also representations of animals (logos, mascots, signs, wall paintings, stickers, posters, origamis, sculptures, statues, plush toys, cartoons, keyrings…). Only in Japan is there such an overwhelming animal presence. However, that country is not a paradise for animals, because their meaning is mainly symbolic. It is above all a bestiary which has been domesticated, tamed, immortalized, and one which fits Japan’s modernity.

My intention was to deal with that theme in a playful and cheerful manner, by taking part to a treasure hunt which goal was to uncover that real and imaginary fauna. Like children trying to catch butterflies, I rediscovered that simple and childish pleasure when I was photographing obvious or hidden signs of that animal presence. That Ariadne’s thread, that I invented, allowed me to (re)discover Japan from a different perspective, that way revealing a particular sensibility which the fondness for animals is a prominent feature of. Why do Japanese give such importance to animals ? I have no answer to that question, but I really like to think that their presence makes the japanese cities and society less hostile and inhumane.

‘The Embalmer’

During century XVI a nobleman from Amsterdam brought on his way back from eastern India, several exemplars of local south eastern Asian birds. Due to a sudden heating system’s failure on his ship all the birds died prematurely. Rare collection exemplars were forever lost. This wealthy Dutchman gathered a team of experts willing to find a way to preserve those rare creatures. He gave life to embalming as a way to conserve in order to show all of the birds exemplars in one room taht he named “room of wonders” and this has been the first collection we have been informed about. Nowadays in Italy, only fee persons practice this so called art of embalming. Anna Maria Bertoni is the last descendant of a long line of embalmers since 1890. Walking into her “room of wonders” feels like being suspended between life and death and experiencing the stillness of purgatory. The artist puts into her every single embalmed creature a deep breath of an immortal life, different kind of animales that have impressed in their deep eyes the last shot of their lives.

I am a Neuroscientist and an avid Art Photographer. My research focused on the study of the mechanisms underlying epilepsy, and the development of innovative cure for this illness. In recent years I found myself directing most of my attention and energy to still life photography of biological specimens, highly inspired by my long lasting confrontation with biological tissues and natural fauna. It takes a while for a young clinician or a researcher to accommodate the laboratory or hospital scenes to enable good performance. This is done by extensive training; some cannot adjust to the visuals. I feel my photographic activity carries me to these regions too. My photographic activity deals with the aesthetics of the scene, improvising various contexts, the tools and paraphernalia shown are not just the typical ones used in the operating place. My “Life Science” project is forcing the biological tissue into a relatively pleasant, sometimes artificial scenarios contemplating issues of materialism, erotica and mortality, corresponding with the complicated and intriguing category of “Animal reminder” in the visual arts.  I feel my work engages also various toning of violence. We tend to describe violent humankind behavior as an animal like beastly revolting one, associated with animal violent behavior.       I believe in many aspects we are inferior to the animal world moral conduct, while being superior in our “creative violent behavior”.
