OPEN CALL ‘SPORT’
Alessandro Calabrese

‘Primapersona’ is a biannual magazine that features unpublished autobiographical texts, whether they are memoirs or autobiographies, diaries or letters that are traces of life written by “ordinary people”. The magazine gives voice to the National Diary Archive of Pieve Santo Stefano in Italy, and moreover, to the general debate on the issues of autobiography.

In each issue, depending on the subject matter, are presented excerpts from these texts, from all periods of our recent history and from all regions of Italy. Their responses act as in an indirect dialogue with the study and theoretical reflections of those who, anthropologist or historian, sociologist and linguist, philosopher and writer,  are convinced that writing is a gesture of inquiry. (to understand something more of ourselves).

Photography has an important role in this magazine. In each article, words torn from the diaries and autobiographical memories are accompanied by images in black and white. Photographs  are carefully selected to dialogue with rather than interpret these words.

Urbanautica will take part in this new issue dedicated to Sports by suggesting a series of photographic projects that will be collected through an open call. In addition our editorial manager Steve Bisson will write a specific essay.

Submission have to bent sent to info@urbanautica.com. Deadline for submission March 7, 2013.

‘Fish Eye’

As documentary photographer, and before that as Fish Pathologist and nature lover, I’m deeply interested on the relationship between human and nature in modern society. In my opinion water is the key of this relationships, so is often the protagonist of my works. “Fish eye” is a conceptual work who investigates over the vision in a transitory situation. These photographs deconstructs visual preconceptions, making us reflect about perception of things from another point of view.

‘Sirin’

«Sirin is the name of the small shelter for dogs and wild animals in the village near Saint Petersburg. Also it’s the name of the mythical bird from Slavic fairy tales. All animals who are kept there cannot live in their natural enviroment because they are injured and disabled or were raised by humans. Bear who cannot sleep in the winter, one-eyed wolf called Yaroslav, fox with a broken jaw, crows and owls with broken wings, autistic dogs. Each animal in Sirin has it’s own special dramatic story and volunteers who work there have special relations to all of them».

‘Nature Illusions’

«The environment of the animals gets formed through the city dweller to something abstract and surrealistic. We build the animals an environment, which is really only for the benefit of us and not for the animal. So that we can enjoy looking at them . Or we train the animals to an attraction, which is converted to natural attitude to an abnormal, more interesting one for us. Man has the upper hand of the animal world and let it grow more and more into his own fantasy world.

In my series “Nature Illusions”, I show how surreal our “natural” surrounding is created today. We destroy original nature in the cities because of our consumption needs. We try with creating fake landscapes to fix the damage. We all long for nature and we do our best to get it back into the city with creations of illusions. I call it illusions, becauce this nature what we creating has nothing to do with original nature or with the feeling you get from it».

‘Urban Safari’

«For many years now (among numerous other thematic photographic adventures) I have been engaged in what I call an “Urban Safari”, “hunting” for and “shooting” the incredible diversity of animals that appear in the urban environments of our world.

However, the peculiar nature of my hunt is that my photographic prey are never wild, never alive and never real — and never have been. Rather I choose to pursue only the myriad forms of “inanimate” animals of every real and fantastic species that exist only through obsessive manmade reproductions (in advertising, street art, public sculpture, decoration, etc.) and yet profusely populate our world — frequently interacting in strange and  whimsical ways with unsuspecting humans and surroundings.

The simple presence of these “animals,” even in the often cold urban landscape,  ultimately reflects a deep respect and appreciation for our mutuality with nature. This is part of what I have attempted to capture and illustrate in this series.»

‘Paris, Ordinary,’

«’Paris, Ordinary,’ is an ongoing project which deals with family bonds, biography and geography. In 2011 my younger brother moved from our hometown to Paris in order to finish his studies. There he found a good job and decided to stay. I often visit my brother and every time I try to understand what his life is like, what he does, where he goes, who he meets. Despite my frequent trips to Paris, I barely know what he does; sometimes I feel like our brother-sister bond has loosen a bit. Then I try to process all the information I can get when I am in Paris with him, through a series of photographs. This work is quite meticulous and voyeuristic, however the most of these images are non-descriptive: They depict small portions of space and unrecognizable people. This is because the project aspires to elicit small stories from my brother’s ordinary, mysterious life. Through this narrative I also try to build a better understanding of the city of Paris, where I actually feel at home because part of my family is there, but where I am still a passenger. Chapter III from the series Paris, Ordinary, shows a sunday spent at the Roland Garros, during a tennis».

Exploration

The title speaks for itself; the project that I propose is a deep exploration of public high school in the Laurentians area in Quebec, CA. Cap Jeunesse high school was the second option that was given to me when I finished my sixth grade. It was located at two steps from my house and was the choice of all my friends from elementary school. But it was and it’s still an institution that carries a heavy reputation due to it’s rough clientele stocked with learning and behavior issues: the reality of the public sector.

So, I attend private school: Académie Lafontaine, at the opposite side of the city. I heard a lot about Cap when I was there because of my friends with whom I kept in touch, I also frequently frequented its surroundings because of my bus transfer and I coached the local swimming team at its adjacent pool, but I never venture myself further. I was ignoring the smell of its hallways, the color of its walls, the lightning of its classrooms, until recently when I started my visual and interrogatory route.

With Exploration, I find this lost fantasy, but protected from the movement and activity of a normal day. I like to find myself completely alone with places, not to be disturbed by anyone and wander at my rhythm to discover and analyses what I see at its most simple expression.

‘Recreation’

«Man-made fishing ponds dot the island of Taiwan. My father was someone who, in my memory, fished everyday and my mom cooked fish everyday. This common recreation in Taiwan was part of my childhood and I did not realize it then but fishing in man-made ponds isn’t common in other parts of the world. Other types of recreation, namely sports, was foreign to me. Sports was not something that I participated in as a spectator or as an athlete. Yet I’m constantly in awe of athletes and their arenas, especially during the Olympics. The images in Recreation are a result of being interested in the curves and architectural elements of the fields and the environment they are in. The past and potential action they contain, the light that the spaces are in, and the functionality of the design are all elements that hold my attention in these courts, fields, and bodies of water».

«Growing up in Eastern Long Island, long summer days were spent chasing gartner snakes, storytelling about bats getting caught in the neighborhood girls’ hair and hunting Eastern Box Turtles to keep as pets. With the years stepping by, the animal sightings grew fewer and fewer. Rapid housing construction and loss of habitat nearly drew sightings to extinction. Through my teens and twenties the damage of fertilizing, septic tanks and this over-building was evident with so few birds and animal sightings in the immediate vicinity. In the last few summers though the fauna has been thriving and coming back with each summer amounting to even more animals returning. Fox are everywhere, species of birds once in danger have ramped up, wild turkeys are in abundance and Eastern Box turtles are roaming in my lawn again».

This Is Not To Be Looked At; Highlights of the Permanent Collection

«The permanent collection of the natural history museum is a hidden world, the backstage area of the museum. It is here that the bulk of the collection is stored and maintained, the majority of pieces never leaving the dark back room spaces for the glossy front-stage of the museum floor. These spaces are forgotten and unnoticed by most museum visitors, hidden away behind large oak panel doors, and beyond windy staircases, in roofs and cellars, storage containers and dusty back rooms.

In the spaces behind the scenes the barrier between the viewer and the viewed is broken down, the objects no longer form part of an elaborate fiction into which we can become immersed. These spaces are rich with tensions and contradictions, modernity and tradition, natural and- artificial, reality and fiction».
